Stainless Steel Care and Maintenance
Stainless steels are steels containing at least 10.5% chromium, less than 1.2% carbon and other alloying elements. Stainless steel does not readily rust nor wear with excessive cleaning. However, all grades of stainless steel will stain and discolour without proper maintenance and cleaning. Here's how to clean and maintain stainless steel furniture properly.
Maintenance
If staining or scratching has occurred, or you need to polish your stainless steel, use a proprietary stainless steel cleaner. Some of these cleaners and polishes can help minimize scratching and remove stains. They can also polish stainless steel surfaces. Read the directions on the stainless steel cleaner and test in an inconspicuous spot. Be sure to rinse thoroughly and towel dry.
Caution
Stainless steel can be contaminated by the pick-up of carbon steel ("free iron") and this is likely to lead to rapid localized corrosion. Do not use strong acid solution or abrasive cleaners. Do not use steel wool, steel brushes or other cleaning materials that contain steel as these can cause rust.
